1. BALI STYLE TERRACOTTA ROOF TILES
Bali style terracotta roof tiles with end decorations | 30-year old Bali style terracotta roof tiles | Black coated Bali style terracotta roof tiles |
The cheapest "hard" roof decking option in Bali. The tiles are made from fired clay, locally available in abundance. Due to the firing process the tiles have a reddish color, however, we can supply them in a few colors as well. Average life time of the tiles is 30 years. Coating may fade over the years and the original red color will start shining through.
Colour Retention
Terracotta tiles are crafted from select natural clays that are kiln-fired to temperatures of up to 1100°C for exceptional character and strength with negligible maintenance requirements. The iron content gives the fired body a red, "terracotta" or brownish color. Tiles csn be coated in a number of colors, however, over time the reddish clay color base will emerge. Terracotta roofing substantially retains its appearance with age, maintaining the aesthetic appearance of your home over time, provided the tiles have not been painted.
Long Lasting
Terracotta tiles are manufactured to last and will make a beautiful and hardwearing roof for your home. Terracotta roofing has brought beauty and character to the roofscapes of Europe and Asia and has stood the test of time over centuries in these continents. Each terracotta tile has a vitrified body that makes it impervious to air and water borne pollutants and able to withstand exposure to harsh UV light without breaking down.
Thermal Performance
The thermal performance of a roof refers to how it affects the temperature within a house and relates to the energy used within the house to maintain the temperature at a comfortable level. The thermal performance of a roof with terracotta tiles can be increased sifgnificantly when isolation material is used
Acoustic Performance
Terracotta roof tiles as their density helps reduce the external sound such as traffic, aircrafts and trains. In fact, roof tiles have a sound reduction potential of 30 decibels as opposed to only 12 decibels for the most commonly used alternatives.
Low Maintenance
Once Terracotta roof tiles are properly installed they have negligible maintenance requirements for the life of the roof. Should a section of the roof ever be damaged or require modification (e.g. installing a skylight), only the affected tiles usually require replacement or removal.
Rainwater & Tank safety
Provided not paint coated, terracotta roof tiles are non-toxic and provided your roof is clean and healthy, can be suitable for the collection of rainwater for reuse.
2. NATURAL THATCH
Kunai grass thatch panel | Freshly installed thatched roof | 6 year old thatched roof |
Thatch is made from bundles of Kunai grass (biological name: Imperata Cylindrica) locally named "alang-alang" for the construction of thatched roofs. They come in panels. Thatch requires a special approach for use in Hawaii and is typically not allowed in residential construction. Australia has very strict import rules and regulations (AQIS). We only use non-seeding alang-alang (minimum 6 months dried), while this old non-seeding grass is thoroughly fumigated with Ethylene Oxide and Methyl Bromide prior to shipment, strict regulations exist in almost all countries.
The grass is dried for at least 6 months and non-seeding, latched to Bangkirai battens (not bamboo, which will not stand the test of time !!!).
After production each and every panel is visually checked by our supervisors and vigorously shaken to discard any lose grass, dust and/or insects. Damaged panels or panels with too low a grass covering will be rejected. Prior to shipment the grass is treated with both Ethylene Oxide and Methyl Bromide as to kill any hiding insects. This special treatment will earn you the ETO Certificate without which you will not be able to import thatch into your country. Worse,....all thatch will be destroyed.
Thatched roofing is an ideal product for roofs of gazebos, bungalows, villas, etc. It does not only have an attractive look, but it also has the capability to insulate. Depending on the height of the roof, internal temperatures can be reduced by 10° Celsius (50° Fahrenheit).
When laid by a professional thatcher, a thatched roof will not leak (normally the roof pitch is some 35 degrees or more).
Maintenance is easy. In Indonesia thatched roofs are hardly maintained, provided the roof is kept free from debris (fallen leaves and bird nests removed). Due to the humid nature major maintenance is required only after some 7 to 8 years of installation. After some 12 years a complete overhaul may be necessary. In dryer countries life time will increase (there are records of some 15 to 20 years).
Important information for our customers in both Hawaii and Australia

No mistake shall be made between a Phytosanitary Certificate and an ETO Certificate, as follows:
A Phytosanitary Certificate is a certificate issued by the Indonesian Quarantine Office (a Governmental office) on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture. The Certificate states that all plant products have been treated using the Indonesian Quarantine standard.
A Fumigation Certificate (Ethylene Oxide & Methyl Bromide gas) is issued by a fumigation company who has been accredited by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Services (AQIS) & the Indonesian Quarantine Office. Both the ETO & Methyl Bromide gas Certificate will be issued separately.
ETO fumigation is mandatory by AQIS for several items such as: bamboo, banana leaf, waterhyacinth, seagrass, thatch |
Synthetic thatch roof | Synthetic thatch roof |
Unlike the natural thatch product, synthetic leaves offer a wide range of advantage. The eco-friendly synthetic palm leaves are made of thermo-molded high density polyethylene (HDPE), a low-flammable type of plastic material and are available in a fire-retardant option. This fire-retardant option is confirmed by the certification ASTM E108 and CSTB M1, which will lower your insurance cost.
These roofing products provide exceptional storm-resistance and wind-resistance and is certified up to 260 km/h. (160 Mph). The product carries a 20-year written warranty and is both ISO 9001 and UV protection ASTM G-26 certified.
NOTE: Synthetic thatch is 5 x higher in pice compared to natural thatch
4. CORRUGATED BARREL TILE SHEATHING
Zinc-aluminum corrugated barrel tile roofing | Available colors |
Corrugated roofing has been traditionally used as a light weight and durable roofing material for roofing applications. The sheets come in panels with a maximum width of 1320 mm and a width of 450 mm. Installation is simple. Minimum life time is 20 years. Available colors; red, black, amber, brown, green and grey.
Corrugated roof sheahing is ideal to be installed in arid countries where rain water needs to be collected, like, the big island in Hawaii, the USVI and several African countries.
Specifications:
The corrugated barrel tile sheathing comes in sheets with a length of 132 cm ( 4’ – 3 7/8”) and comprises 7 tiles in a row, or 110 cm (3’ – 7 1/4”) and comprises 5 tiles in a row. Available colors: red, black, amber, light green and dark green. The thickness is either 0.35 mm, 0.3 mm or 0.25 mm. The sheathing is composed in 8 or 9 layers as follows
- Epoxy primer,
- Polyester zinc coating,
- Zinc aluminum coating,
- Steel base,
- Zinc Aluminum coating,
- Epoxy primer,
- Acrylic base coat, (stone chips),
- Acrylic over glaze.
The sheathing is non-toxic and can be utilized to catch rain water. Two types of sheathing can be supplied, either without or with stone chips.
5. HARDWOOD SHINGLES
Our proven hardwood shingle panels (*), see end of page | Shingle panels installed | Single panel system indstalled on a roof |
LATEST NEWS ON ROOF SHINGLES
The total ban on the export of Iron wood beams and boards remains, howrver, the Indonesian Government has relaxed the export regulations for Iron wood roof shingles.
The Indonesian Government announced a TOTAL ban on the export of Iron wood (the wood species from which roof shingels are produced) a few years ago. As such not one manufacturer in Indonesia was allowed to utilize this wood species for roof shingles. The Government has relaxed the export of Iron wood shingles recenlty, provided the shingles are newly produced. Iron wood shingels from old stock are NOT allowed to be exported. Minimum order is 100 m2 (1,080 sqft).
The use of old and new Iron wood roof shingles for local (Indonesian) purposes, however, is still allowed.
Since a ban on Iron wood shingles may well be imposed again we offer an alternative solution for our houses following an in-house developed system using a hardwood species which is allowed to be shipped abroad.
(*) Our alternative shingle panel roof system is the result of a 5-year long developing process. The shingles are fixed onto a Bangkirai timber frame which measures only 1600 x 300 mm (5' - 3" x 1' - 0"). The weight of the frame + shingles attached to it is just 40 kgs (88 lbs).
Our system allows 2 persons to install the shingle panels one-by-one until the roof is fully covered, rather than the system whereas half or a quarter of a roof section needs to be lifted in place requiring a small crane or a jib. The seams between these large panels are often not waterproof, are damaged and/or broken. With our paneling system such is impossible while the installation is very simple. Read <more>
6. GRASS ROOFS
Typical grass roof build-up | Intensive, semi intensive and extensive grass roof build-up |
INTENSIVE GRASS ROOF
An intensive green (grass0 roof system is characterized by its variety of vegetation ranging from herbaceous plants to small trees with professionel maintenance and advanced green roof irrigation systems. A typical growing medium depth of an intensive green roof is 6 inches or more. Intensive green roofs offer a great potential for design and biodiversity. This system supports everything from small personal/home gardens to full scale public parks. Plant selection and design greatly affects the maintenance required for the upkeep of these roofs. Rooftop farms, urban roof farms or vegetable farms on roofs are clearly intensive green roofs and require higher nutrient applications and focused maintenance.
EXTENSIVE GRASS ROOF
An extensive green roof system is characterized of its vegetation, ranging from sedums to small grasses, herbs and flowering herbaceous plants, which need little maintenance and no permanent irrigation system. The growing medium depth for an extensive green roof system is typically 3 TO 6 inches. These systems are ideal for efficient stormwater management with low maintenance needs. Extensive greenroofs are very cost efficient. Extensive green roofs are ideal for integrated PV/Solar systems.
